Running a children’s book drive is fun, draws your community in, and can last for as short or long as you wish, online or in person - it’s entirely up to you! We rely on book drives to keep our Book Bank shelves brimming with fabulous treasures all year round. Donating used books keeps them out of the landfill and allows them to recirculate into the hands of the young readers we serve, many of whom have never owned a book. Since 1992, we’ve given away millions of books to low-income children all around Northern California - and more than 212,000 books since the start of the pandemic. The Build a Better Book project works with school and library Makerspaces to engage youth in the design and fabrication of inclusive media. The book projecta signature initiative out of the Office of Campus Community Relations, a unit in the Office of Diversity, Equity. There is still the need for a bit of escapism in every day life but with the reopening of charity shops to drop in your book donations and the reopening of libraries, some elements are not as strongly desired. The UC Davis Campus Community Book Project (CCBP) promotes dialogue and builds community by encouraging diverse members of the campus and surrounding communities to read the same book and attend related events. We are taking this time to evaluate which elements are still wanted and needed by our local communities so will be putting some aspects on hold for the time being. As we have appeared to have returned to a more open way of living, the need for certain elements of the project have naturally fallen away. The Book Project was designed and implemented at the height of the covid-19 pandemic.
